Cranking things up on the construction site
There’s a lot of heavy lifting that’s needed on a modern construction site. Everything from airconditioners to trusses to steelwork are not easily transported without a crane but many builders on the South Coast are under the impression that cranes are not available for hire unless they go to Durban.
But local contractors need not go out of the area for crane hire because Margate Engineering, a prominent South Coast business for more than half a century, owns and operates a versatile multi-purpose 15 ton crane with 20 metre boom. Dave Higson, who manages the company’s crane operations, says “Our crane is all terrain and has 4 wheel drive which makes it suitable for virtually any building site. Because of its height and reach, its abilities exceed that of a normal truck crane and can go over walls and well into a building structure. We also supply the operator for a project, making it truly a local affair.”
It is also an advantage that Margate Engineering is equipped to both manufacture and install steel structures, a type of construction which is growing in popularity in the region especially with large commercial projects. Indeed, many local landmarks rest solidly on Margate Engineering’s robust, galvanised steel structural work.
